Get to know Julius, his story, and the creation of Optimal Performance.
The end of the bench
Julius Thomas learned early what it feels like to not be good enough.
As a freshman, he sat at the end of the bench.
He entered the game with six minutes left in a blowout.
On the two-hour bus ride home, embarrassed and frustrated, he made a decision.
He wasn’t good enough — yet.
But he could be if he stopped blaming and started committing.
And life kept testing that commitment. Benched in high school.
Benched in college.
Benched in the NFL.
Each time: “Here we go again.”
He learned that growth can be earned.
He learned that managing emotion under pressure changes outcomes.
Long before studying psychology, he was living it.
When success wasn’t enough
Years later, that process led to elite performance.
Professional success.
Status.
Financial freedom.
The million-dollar home.
Everything he once chased.
And then a question surfaced:
“Why don’t I feel happier?”
There was a gap between his outer world and his inner world.
He had mastered performance.
He had neglected wellbeing.
That’s when he realized something most high performers never see coming.
Performance without wellbeing is unsustainable.
I wish I would have known sooner
In the locker room, he began noticing the suffering in others.
In graduate school, he saw the data.
The health burden was staggering.
Then, during clinical rotations in a rehabilitation hospital, he heard the same words again and again:
“I wish I would have known sooner.”
Sooner how to manage stress.
Sooner how to protect their health.
Sooner how to live differently.
The tragedy wasn’t failure.
It was late awareness.
That’s when he began defining what he now calls the Cost of Performance, the accumulated strain on mental, emotional, physical, and relational health that builds when professional success is pursued without a system for wellbeing.
He knew he didn’t want to help people after their collapse.
He wanted to prevent it.
A new standard for high performance
High performers are trained to produce results.
They are rarely trained to protect their wellbeing.
Optimal Performance was built to change that.
Excellence must include both maximum performance and maximum wellbeing.
This is the Dual Mandate.
